About Yuzen Washi
■About Yuzen Washi
In Japan, there is a technique called yuzen dyeing.
Yuzen dyeing is one of the traditional techniques used to dye kimonos and obis in Japan, and is a dyeing method that expresses various colors on cloth as if drawing a picture.
It is said to have originated in the field of gorgeous pattern dyeing, which was inspired by the painting style of Miyazaki Yuzenzai, a fan painter who gained popularity in Kyoto during the Edo period, and was applied to kimono designs.
And the paper featuring yuzen-dyed patterns is called yuzen washi.
■Characteristics of Yuzen Washi
Vivid colors and beautiful patterns are the characteristics of yuzen washi.
Yuzen washi is a hand-printed washi in which pigments are mixed to create each color, and then dyed over and over by craftsmen using a number of molds.
Although this is a very time-consuming process, it produces excellent colors and delicate patterns.
Currently, paper printed with patterns like yuzen washi is sometimes called yuzen washi, but our yuzen washi is carefully hand-dyed by craftsmen in Kyoto, one sheet at a time.
